NORTH AMERICA HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
When people think of North America, they think of the USA – a place you must visit at least once in your lifetime, but the continent has so much more to offer:
The US National Parks Service oversees hundred’s of protected areas, including Yellowstone (the oldest) and Alaska’s Wrangell St-Elias (the biggest; larger than Switzerland), but further north, Canada has endless emptiness, home to wolf, bear and moose, much of which can only be accessed by floatplane.
- Tiptoe through hemlock forests, alpine tundra, and along high, airy ridges with views of islands and the navy-coloured sound of Howe Sound Crest Trail, British Columbia
- Trek along jungle cliffs between Ke’e Beach and Kalalau, an idyllic Hawaiian spit of sand reachable only by foot or boat and see waterfalls cascading down the valleys, and beautiful views over the Pacific clear to the horizon.
- Look out for black bears, beavers, and even moose on Le Fjord Trail, Québecas you ramble through balsam fir and birch forests, passing rocky alpine lookouts with views over the fjord some 600 vertical feet down.
- Enjoy high alpine scenery: fields bursting with wildflowers, dark peaks spearing the sky, bucolic lakes, and a preponderance of big wildlife (bison, bears, wolves) on the strenuous Teton Crest Trail, Wyoming
- Wind along the spine of the Sierra Nevada range and deep into Yosemite and Sequoia & Kings Canyon national parks with its rocky scrambles, fields packed with wildflowers, and starry night skies.
- Hop a bush plane to access this northernmost band of the Rocky Mountains, where there are no established trails (or campgrounds) but dramatic, pristine Alaskan nature abounds: high peaks, valleys full of tundra plants, caribou herds (and the grizzlies that hunt them).
