Classic Destinations, With a Twist

Some places are so iconic that it is hard not to include them in a trip. But that does not mean you have to experience them in predictable ways.

With the right perspective, even the most familiar destinations can feel fresh. I often weave one or two more unusual experiences into an itinerary so you still get the classics, but with more depth, better pacing, and far more memorable moments.

If you are curious about how I build trips like this, you can start with tailor-made travel and my approach to planning on why book with me.

Why explore classic destinations differently?

Classic destinations are popular for good reason. The twist is usually not about skipping the highlights, it is about how you experience them. Earlier starts, better guiding, the right timing, and a different lens can turn a well known sight into something genuinely personal.

Morocco: Atlas Mountains and Lunch with a Berber Family

Any hike through the Atlas Mountains brings panoramic views, steep orange slopes, red clay soil, wind-stunted juniper trees and shaggy goats picking their way across loose stone. But the mountains are also shaped by the Berber communities who have lived here for generations.

Stepping inside a family home for lunch is one of those experiences that stays with you. Sitting on embroidered cushions around a low table, sharing a simple spiced tagine, you get a glimpse of life that feels warm, unforced, and quietly unforgettable.

Cusco: Food Discovery

I always recommend spending a few days in Cusco to adjust to the altitude. It can feel surprisingly tiring at first, and the city rewards travellers who give it time.

Think beyond a standard city tour and dive into the local food scene. An eat like a local experience often starts at San Pedro Market, where families shop for fruit and veg, and stalls overflow with everything from chicken soup to handicrafts and the occasional curious concoction. You might taste lúcuma, a fruit with a nutty caramel flavour, before trying classic dishes such as cuy and anticuchos, balanced with local teas along the way.

The Sydney Opera House: Backstage

Most first-time visitors to Sydney find themselves drawn to the Opera House, perched in the harbour like something sculpted from light. Even if you are not a performing arts devotee, it is hard not to wonder what happens under those famous sails.

If you want a deeper look, the VIP route is the one worth taking. Meeting early, you explore the underbelly of the building with an official guide, stepping into different performance spaces, standing on stage, and even peering into an orchestra pit. The experience ends in the Green Room, a behind-the-scenes space most visitors never see.

Tikal and its Lesser-Known Mayan Sites

Tikal may be Guatemala’s headline ruin, but it is the lesser-known sites nearby that can feel like the true twist. Uaxactún is only a short drive away, yet it feels worlds apart.

Nothing is polished into place here. Stones lie where they fell, the jungle steadily reclaims its own, and birds haunt the canopy. The site is maintained by the local village, and visits can include lunch in a family home, a guided wander through the ruins, and even an overnight stay for stargazing and a dawn chorus of calling parrots.

Hanoi: Through a Camera Lens

Hanoi is made for photography: lakes, Taoist temples, French-colonial architecture, and endless street scenes. But for more distinctive images and a more local feel, a photography tour with a Hanoi resident is a brilliant way to explore. Guides can tailor the route and help you experiment with angles, light and composition as you wander.

Hobbiton: With an After-Dark Feast

Many visitors to New Zealand, Tolkien fans or not, want to see Hobbiton. The attention to detail is exquisite, but the volume of tours can make it feel more like a theme park than a pastoral fantasy.

The twist is timing. Go later in the day and stay for dinner. You see the set soften into evening light, then settle into a communal feast at the Green Dragon Inn. After dark, Hobbiton becomes something else entirely: lantern-lit, smoky chimneys, and a far more peaceful atmosphere.

Jasper National Park: By Harley-Davidson Sidecar

Most people explore Jasper by car, on foot, or by bike. But a sidecar experience changes the feel completely. You are closer to the scenery, more exposed to the elements, and far more tuned into the atmosphere of the forest.

Setting off from Jasper with a local guide, you can tailor the route to your interests: Maligne Canyon, the lakes, or sweeping valley drives. Midway, you stop to stretch your legs and take photographs. Then you ride on, either in the sidecar or on the back of the motorcycle if you want a slightly more thrilling finish.

Yellowstone National Park: Wildlife With a Biologist

Yellowstone is extraordinary explored independently, but some of its most elusive wildlife can be difficult to spot without local knowledge. That is where a private biologist guide transforms the experience.

Many guides have worked in the park for years, and their passion and insight shine through. Starting early, you explore by 4x4 when wildlife is most active, learning about the ecosystem, geology and history as you go. Guides often communicate by radio too, which helps them share up-to-date information on where animals are likely to be.

Phnom Penh: By Vespa

Many people come to Phnom Penh to understand its recent history. But the city is also a vibrant mix of modern bars, micro-breweries and cafés alongside gilded Khmer architecture.

A Vespa evening tour is a fabulous way to see a different side: rooftop cocktails, local delicacies, and pockets of the city you would never find alone. It is lively, delicious, and brilliantly atmospheric.

Varanasi: An In-Depth Spiritual Tour

Varanasi is intense, complex and deeply moving. You can watch the evening aarti ceremonies and boat along the Ganges, but a guided experience focused on spiritual significance offers a deeper layer of understanding.

Over the course of an evening, you weave through backstreets and hidden temples, gradually exploring themes of death and rebirth that shape the city. You might visit a small stepwell used for fertility rituals, an ashram humming with devotional chanting, and riverside viewpoints where ceremonies unfold in candlelit rhythm.
