How to Make the Most of Your Time in India

India is one of those destinations where the gap between a well-planned trip and a rushed one is particularly wide. It is a vast country, and trying to cover too much in one go is the most common mistake I see. The clients who come home most satisfied are the ones who chose a focus, had a private driver and vehicle throughout, and gave themselves enough time in each place to actually settle into it.

Choosing your India

North and south India are distinct enough to be treated as separate trips. Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle, covering Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, give you the forts, the desert landscape, the Mughal architecture, and the tiger country. Kerala, in the south, is greener, slower, and more intimate: backwaters, spice plantations, and a pace that suits clients who want a counterpoint to a previous Rajasthan visit or who prefer a gentler introduction to the country.

Ten nights is the realistic minimum to get anything worthwhile out of either region. It gives you the Golden Triangle properly, or Kerala at a relaxed pace, with room for a safari without feeling as though you are moving every day. Fourteen nights is where the trip starts to feel genuinely generous: you can cover the main circuit, add an extension or two, and still have breathing space between places.

On a two-week trip, choosing one region almost always produces a better result than attempting both. At three weeks or more, a well-structured combination begins to make sense.

When to go

November to February is the window for northern India. Temperatures across Rajasthan are comfortable, the national parks are fully open, and the light is exceptional. December and January are the most popular months and the most expensive.

October is worth considering if you want good value and fewer visitors. The parks at Ranthambore and Bandhavgarh reopen on the first of October after the monsoon closure, and the landscape is vivid and freshly green.

Kerala works well throughout the October to April window. From May onwards in the north, and certainly through the monsoon months of July to September, most of the main itineraries are not worth attempting. The national parks in Rajasthan close on the 30th of June, and the heat in April and May is serious.

The Tiger Parks

For many of my clients, a tiger safari is the centrepiece of an India trip, and it rewards careful advance planning. Ranthambore is the park most commonly combined with a Rajasthan itinerary because it sits within convenient distance of the Golden Triangle. It is well-run and the sighting record is good, but permit allocations to the best zones fill well ahead of the season and it receives considerable visitor numbers.

Bandhavgarh, in Madhya Pradesh, has a higher tiger density and consistently better sighting rates. It requires an internal flight and sits further from the main Rajasthan circuit, but for clients for whom actually seeing a tiger matters more than convenience, it is often the better choice. The two parks can also be combined on a longer itinerary.

Both require booking through a specialist well ahead of travel. Walk-in permits for the core zones are rare.

Experiences worth planning specifically for

The Taj Mahal at sunrise is not a cliche. It is one of those rare cases where a world-famous monument genuinely lives up to its reputation, and the quality of the experience depends almost entirely on arriving early, before the main crowds, with a knowledgeable local guide. A midday visit in peak season is a considerably more disappointing experience.

A night on a private houseboat in the Kerala backwaters is worth the planning involved. The boats with an on-board cook, teak decks, and air-conditioned bedrooms are a different category from the cheaper shared options, and the experience of waking at dawn on the water to the sound of the backwaters coming to life is one that clients mention consistently.

Varanasi is challenging and unlike anywhere else in India. The early morning boat on the Ganges, watching the ghats and the city come to life from the water, is widely described by people who have done it as one of the most memorable hours of an entire trip. It is not for everyone, but for clients who want to understand India at its most concentrated, it is hard to equal.

In Rajasthan, heritage hotels are not all the same thing. The category covers everything from a basic atmospheric guesthouse to a genuinely extraordinary palace. The best properties, many of them run by families who have lived in them for generations, offer architecture, gardens, and a sense of place that no standard five-star hotel can replicate. These properties are a significant part of what makes a quality Rajasthan trip, and I am glad to advise on which ones stand out at different budget levels.

Flights and practicalities

Direct flights from London to Delhi take around nine hours. British Airways, Air India, and Virgin Atlantic all operate this route from Heathrow. Indirect routings via the Gulf can offer better fares but add travel time, and direct routes are worth the consideration where budgets allow.

For south India, flights to Kochi for a Kerala trip are typically indirect and run to around eleven to thirteen hours.

UK passport holders require an e-visa for India. The application is entirely online, takes around ten minutes, and the fee is modest. It is worth completing well ahead of your departure date.

Internal flights within India are often necessary, particularly if you are combining Bandhavgarh with a Rajasthan itinerary or travelling between north and south. I factor these into any itinerary from the outset.

Planning with a budget in mind

India can be done at a range of levels, and the difference between them is meaningful. A quality mid-range trip, with a private driver throughout, good heritage guesthouses, and one or two safaris at a well-regarded lodge, is achievable on a realistic budget for a couple over ten to twelve nights. Above that level, the accommodation options improve considerably, reaching the palace hotels and specialist wildlife lodges that are genuinely among the best in the world.

I am happy to talk through what different investment levels actually buy before you commit to anything. Most people find it useful to have a realistic conversation about this early in the planning process. You can read more about how I work before getting in touch.

If you are thinking about India and are not sure where to start, I am always happy to talk through the options at the early stages of planning.
