Hello Adventurers!
As the summer heat blazes on (somewhere, just not in the UK!), it’s the perfect time to think about unique ways to explore the world. I’m writing to you from a breathtaking river cruise along the Danube with Riviera Travel, and I can’t wait to share some insights from this journey. Whether you’re considering a serene cruise through Europe’s most beautiful cities or looking for a cool escape from the summer heat, this newsletter has something for you.
In this edition, I’ll take you along on my Danube River adventure, where I’ve discovered that river cruising offers something for everyone - be it solo travellers, couples, or families. And for those of you looking to beat the heat, I’ll introduce you to the latest travel trend, “Coolcationing,” which is all about enjoying cooler, less crowded destinations during the summer months.
Let’s dive in and explore the wonders of river cruising and the joys of travelling to cooler climates!
I’m currently enjoying an incredible river cruise along the Danube with Riviera Travel, and I must say - it’s an experience that truly caters to everyone. Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with family and friends, this cruise has something special for you.
The itinerary has been nothing short of fantastic. We’ve explored iconic cities like Budapest and Vienna, but what I love most is how the scenery continuously changes. You’re constantly surrounded by beautiful landscapes - rolling hills, charming villages, and stunning architecture. It’s like being in a moving postcard, without the hassle of packing and unpacking!
One of the highlights for me has been the cultural immersion. The excursions are top-notch, whether it’s touring grand palaces, enjoying classical concerts, or wandering through historic towns. Plus, the relaxed pace allows you to really soak in the local vibe. Take a look at my facebook page for some photos and videos from the trip
And let’s talk convenience - everything’s taken care of. From meals to excursions, and even some drinks, it’s all included, so you can just relax and enjoy. It’s accessible to all ages and travel styles, and I’ve hardly spent anything extra this week (except for the occasional ice cream!). This makes it ideal for budget-conscious travellers, as you know exactly what your holiday will cost upfront.
One thing I’ve learnt, though, is that there’s a reason August isn’t peak season for river cruising in Europe - it’s simply too hot! While it’s lovely to see the sun, the recent heatwave summers mean it’s too hot to sunbathe onboard except in the shade, and city tours can be exhausting with temperatures in the high 30s! The best months to travel are May/June and September/October. (For alternative summer holidays, check out my commentary on “Coolcations” below.)
To be honest, I didn’t think river cruising would be for me. I always imagined it would be too slow-paced or not adventurous enough. But I’ve been completely converted. The blend of relaxation, cultural richness, and ever-changing scenery has won me over. It’s such a unique way to see Europe, especially with an itinerary like The Blue Danube River Cruise from Riviera Travel.

As mentioned earlier, the increasingly frequent heatwaves during European summers have led to a new concept in holidays - Coolcationing.
In recent years, rising global temperatures have prompted a fresh perspective on summer holidays. Instead of enduring the sweltering heat in traditional beach destinations, more travellers are embracing Coolcationing - a refreshing way to explore the world’s cooler, more temperate regions.
Coolcationing involves choosing destinations known for their milder climates during summer. Imagine escaping to Norway’s stunning landscapes for a hike along breathtaking fjords, or exploring the serene beauty of Iceland’s geothermal wonders. These cooler climates not only offer relief from the heat but also present unique and unforgettable experiences, often with fewer crowds.
Escape the Heat: As summers get hotter, Coolcationing lets you enjoy your holiday without the discomfort of extreme temperatures. Destinations like Finland, Scotland, and Latvia offer the perfect balance of sunshine and cool breezes.
Tranquil and Less Crowded: Cooler destinations tend to attract fewer tourists, giving you the chance to enjoy peaceful, uncrowded spaces. Whether it’s a quiet walk through Scotland’s rolling hills or a serene boat ride in Norway, Coolcationing invites you to unwind and soak in the beauty of your surroundings.
Unique Adventures: Coolcationing is not just about avoiding the heat; it’s about discovering new adventures. Think of kayaking under the midnight sun in Scandinavia, hiking through Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, or cycling through Slovenia’s picturesque trails. These experiences add a unique twist to your summer getaway.
Family-Friendly Fun: Cooler climates offer the perfect setting for outdoor activities without the worry of extreme heat. Whether it’s exploring Finland’s lush forests or enjoying a leisurely day by a Scottish loch, these destinations provide safe and enjoyable environments for all ages.
Eco-Conscious Travel: For those who prioritise sustainability, Coolcationing often means spending time in natural settings, supporting local communities, and engaging in environmentally friendly activities. It’s a way to travel that aligns with a growing awareness of our impact on the planet.
Let’s plan your perfect Coolcation and explore the cooler side of travel together!
