Small Group Tours in Japan

Looking for that sweet spot between independent travel and a package holiday?

Small group tours in Japan can work brilliantly. You still get the contrast, curiosity and sense of discovery that make the country so compelling, but without having to organise every train, transfer and overnight stop yourself.

Travelling as part of a small group has real advantages here. There are expert tour leaders to take the hassle out of the practical side, help you get more from the places you are seeing, and make the whole journey feel far less hard work. Groups are usually small, often around 8 to 16 people, which keeps the experience more relaxed and less disruptive than a large coach tour. It also works very well for solo travellers.

Ready to say Konnichiwa to Japan?

Famed for futuristic cities, ancient traditions, unforgettable food and striking natural beauty, Japan is one of those places that really does wake up all your senses and send you home wanting more.

Learn to roll sushi, wield a sword like a samurai, fall for enchanted castles, or spend the night in the company of monks in a thousand-year-old Buddhist temple. Whatever it is that draws you to Japan, this is a country that rewards curiosity.

Why Japan gets under your skin

Nowhere on the planet do the modern and the ancient coexist quite like they do here. Kimono-clad women chat on futuristic phones while bullet trains flash past, thousand-year-old temples sit beneath glass towers, and neon signs reflect in flooded green rice paddies.

On the surface, Japan can look sleek, ordered and intensely modern. Travel through it properly and there are constant chances to connect with something older, quieter and more deeply rooted.

  • Spend the night in a ryokan, sleeping on futons and tatami mats
  • Meditate with monks or learn to whisk bitter matcha tea
  • Enjoy the splendour of a Kyoto geisha dance
  • Relax in the spare beauty of a Zen rock garden
  • Eat your way through a country where the food shifts beautifully from region to region
  • Travel through mountains, hot springs, cedar forests and ancient shrines

Japan is over two-thirds mountains, with bubbling hot springs at every turn. In the warmer months there is excellent hiking through cedar groves and wildflower-filled landscapes. In winter, much of that same scenery is snow-covered and the skiing is world-class. Further south, there are tropical beaches for sunning, snorkelling and diving.

What kind of Japan are you picturing?

Some people come for Tokyo and Kyoto. Others want temple stays, food experiences, mountain scenery, bullet train journeys, cherry blossom, autumn colour, or a version of Japan that feels quieter and less obvious. If you want inspiration for a classic first route, you can also read Japan’s Golden Route.

Japan is incredibly easy to get around in some ways, and these days there is a lot more English spoken than many people expect. But if you want to travel beyond the easiest routes, or simply want the whole trip to feel richer and less stressful, a well-planned small group journey can work brilliantly.

If Japan appeals but a group trip does not feel quite right for you, I can also help with tailor made travel. If this is more about romance than group travel, you could also look at honeymoons in Japan. If you would rather move at your own pace, there is also self-guided travel in Japan.

Choosing Japan well

With 30 years of adventure travel experience, I can help you work out which route, pace and operator genuinely suit you. I stay independent, so I can focus on the right fit for your interests, budget and the way you like to travel, rather than pushing one fixed itinerary. You can also read more about why clients book with me.

And because operator choice matters here too, I prefer trips that feel well paced, respectful and thoughtfully put together. You can read more about that on my Responsible Travel page.
