SMALL GROUP ADVENTURES IN NORTH AMERICA
Looking for that sweet spot between independent backpacking and a package holiday?
Travelling as part of a Small Group tour has its perks. There are local expert tour leaders to take the hassle out of travel arrangements and show you the sights, plus a group of like-minded travellers to share the fun with. All you have to do is turn up with a smile and a passport
Groups are small, normally 8-16 people, meaning the trips aren’t disruptive to the places we visit, and a smaller number creates a good group dynamic; you’ll get to know a range of people from different backgrounds with a shared interest in travel.
Got the urge for adventure, but no-one to do it with? Over half of the travellers on Small Group trips are travelling solo.
If you want epic, you’ve come to the right place. The vast territory that makes up the US and Canada is a place of mythic journeys, eye-boggling scenery, and – beyond those headline-grabbing, culture-dominating cities – raw wilderness.

NORTH AMERICA HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
When people think of North America, they think of the USA – a place you must visit at least once in your lifetime, but the continent has so much more to offer:
The US National Parks Service oversees hundred’s of protected areas, including Yellowstone (the oldest) and Alaska’s Wrangell St-Elias (the biggest; larger than Switzerland). Further north, Canada has endless emptiness, home to wolf, bear and moose, much of which can only be accessed by floatplane.
Domestic flights are extensive and affordable, but for romance and views hire a car or a campervan, ride the Greyhound bus or take the train for a days-long trundle between cities. Some of the best journeys are offshore, too: the ferry journey through Alaska’s Inside Passage is a gold-rush history lesson and whale-watching extravaganza rolled into one.
You’d need months to scratch the surface of the whole continent, so instead focus on a big trip (coast to coast, Route 66, California’s Pacific Coast Highway) or a region (e.g. the Great Lakes or Vancouver and the Canadian West). North America may be all about big journeys, but don’t forget to stop and linger too.
