Train travel is easily the most underrated form of long-distance travel out there.

There's something old-school and charming about riding trains. Between the food car, the conductors, and the world flying by outside your window, there's a nostalgic appeal to train travel.

Travelling by train can be incredibly scenic. You can see cities, mountains and rivers from the seat of a train. Train travel is just an all-around better, more relaxing experience than its air and car counterparts. While those are mainly about getting from point A to point B, trains are about the ride.

Whatever it is that draws you to Rail travel in Africa, let us take you there.

World Class Adventures has access to the best tour operators and will tailor the perfect holiday just for you.

Our Favourite Epic African Rail journeys:

  • Rovos Rail
    • The most comfortable way to see southern Africa!  In the beautifully restored luxury coaches you may venture as far as Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Swakopmund in Namibia, but the most frequent route is between Cape Town and Pretoria.
  • Blue Train, South Africa
    • South Africa’s national luxury train is one of the oldest, though frequently upgraded to become more luxurious. Travelling between Cape Town and Pretoria break the journey at Kimberley for a visit to the Big Hole and its Diamond Mine Museum, or at Matjiesfontein for sherry in the Lord Milner Hotel
  • Shongololo Express
    • The Shongololo Express caters for travellers keen to see southern Africa rather than pay for an opulent train experience. Traversing South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, there are various itineraries including golfing, and all visit game, historic or archaeological sites.
  • Tangier to Casablanca, Morocco
    • The first high-speed line in Africa is between Tangier and Kenitra and has connections on to Marrakech.
  • Nairobi to Mombasa, Kenya
    • The Chinese-built standard-gauge railway between Nairobi and Mombasa Large windows allow good views over the Kapiti Plains and Tsavo National Park, so passengers would be unlucky not to see game.
  • Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi
    • The 1,155-mile Tazara Railway between Dar es Salaam, and Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia The journey often allows sightings of elephants, giraffes, zebra and antelope as it clips the Selous Game Reserve, and there is a spectacular mountain section with numerous bridges and tunnels.
  • Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
    • The overnight journey from Bulawayo via Victoria Falls Ngamo is basic, but some find the Zimbabwean wood-panelled coaches from another era and the sight of game more than compensate for shortcomings in other aspects of the experience. From Hwange, the Elephant Express, an open-sided railcar designed for game viewing, which will take them to Ngamo
  • Cairo to Luxor, Egypt
    • To appreciate the Nile valley and the river’s feluccas (traditional wooden sailing boats) and thin banks of fertility, take the daytime express rather than the overnight sleeper.
