  • Kaikoura - The coastal town has the advantage of being close to the continental shelf which means that a wide variety of birds are present in the region. Albatross: Black-browed bullers, royal, salvins, and shy, Cape pigeon, Fairy prion, Giant petrels, Westland black petrels
  • Miranda Shorebird Centre - The prize attraction is the Wrybill, but also home to Eastern-bar tailed godwit, Pied oystercatchers, Red-necked stint, Turnstone, White herons or kotuku

  • Stewart Island - The island is sparsely habituated by humans, so many different bird species call this area home. This includes the famous kiwi bird which outnumbers the local population of human by 50 to 1 as well as Kaka, Penguins: blue, yellow-eyed, and Fjordland crested Seabirds.
  • Tiritiri Matangi Island -  A 220-hectare island, just over half consists of forests while the rest is grasslands, providing a diverse environment for many rare bird species, including the flightless takahe and the tuatara.
