Peru in 5 days:

Tuesday - As I boarded my evening flight from London Heathrow to Madrid with Iberia, excitement bubbled. The anticipation of exploring Peru, a land steeped in ancient history and natural wonders, filled every moment of the journey. As a group of travel agents, hosted by Latin Routes, we flew via Madrid with Latam Airlines.

Wednesday - Stepping off the plane in Lima, I was greeted by the warm embrace of Peruvian hospitality. After a seamless transfer to the luxurious 5-star Iberostar Selection Miraflores, I kicked off my exploration with a hearty buffet breakfast, fueling up for the adventures ahead.

The panoramic city tour of Lima was a feast for the senses, guided by locals whose passion for their city was infectious. Walking through the historic centre, I couldn't help but be transported back in time amidst the UNESCO-listed Plaza Mayor. Each colonial-era building whispered tales of Lima's rich past.

In Miraflores, the upscale district stole my heart with its ocean views and vibrant atmosphere. The tour also included a stop at Huaca Pucllana, an ancient pre-Inca pyramid located in the heart of Miraflores The visit to Love Park was particularly enchanting, with its whimsical mosaic walls framing breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

Lunch back at the hotel was more than just a meal; it was a chance to connect with fellow travellers and forge new friendships. The afternoon's training session left me brimming with excitement for the myriad destinations Latin Routes had to offer.

As evening descended, the welcome party atop the hotel's rooftop provided a fitting start to our Peruvian adventure, complete with stunning views and promises of unforgettable experiences.  I spent the night in Lima at the very comfortable 4* Casa Andina, excited for the days ahead

Thursday - A day filled with enriching training awaited as we delved deeper into the Academy agenda. We spent a morning focussed on all the remaining destinations that our hosts Latin Routes can offer – more on that in a separate article coming soon! The afternoon was a ‘speed-‘networking’ meeting with 20+ suppliers from Latin America, showcasing their properties and itineraries.  From luxury cruises in the Galapagos to homestays on Argentinean ranches, the possibilities are endless!

The gala dinner at Country Club Lima Hotel was a highlight, not only for its exquisite cuisine but also for the opportunity to give back. The charity auction raised over £4.5k for Latin Routes Charities Kids Saving The Rainforest and the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust, reminding us of the importance of sustainable travel.

Friday - A leisurely brunch at Hotel B Barranco set the tone for a day of exploration in Lima's bohemian neighbourhood. Barranco's colourful streets and historic mansions captivated me, offering glimpses into Peru's artistic soul. This luxurious hotel has an amazing team of staff that cater for your every need, and ensure every detail is taken care of from the moment you arrive.  A visit to Hotel Jose Antonio showcased budget-friendly options without compromising on comfort, catering perfectly to families and groups of friends.

The flight to Cusco brought with it both excitement and challenges, as some of the group grappled with altitude sickness. Yet, amidst the discomfort, the warmth of our group and the beauty of our surroundings served as constant reminders of the magic awaiting us.

We indulged in a delicious dinner at the Novotel in Cusco.  This was no ordinary Novotel though!!  A beautiful old colonial building set around a courtyard – something really special!  I settled in for an early(ish) night at the contemporary Sonesta Hotel after a warm Quechua welcome with Coca Leaves to chew and Muña tea so aid our adjustment to the altitude!

Saturday - The (5am) early morning journey to Ollantaytambo, a captivating archaeological site and living Inca village,  was punctuated by breathtaking vistas of the Sacred Valley, setting the stage for our visit to Machu Picchu. The train ride and subsequent bus journey only added to the sense of anticipation.

Arriving at Machu Picchu, 2,200m above sea level was a dream realized, as local guides led us through the ancient site, weaving tales of its storied past. The hike to the top was nothing short of awe-inspiring, each step bringing us closer to one of the world's greatest wonders (and several Alpaca and Llamas!).  I had my passport stamped to prove I was there – the only stamp I have that’s for a place, not a country!

After we came back down into the town, we enjoyed a late lunch at Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, taking in the serene surroundings of the beautiful gardens..

Sunday - Our final day in Peru was spent exploring the historic streets of Cusco, a fitting end to our adventure. From the Plaza de Armas to the ancient fortress of Sacsayhuamán, every corner revealed a piece of Peru's rich tapestry.

As thunderstorms chased us indoors, we took to souvenir shopping (haggling compulsory!) and then treated ourselves to a farewell lunch at the fabulous boutique Andenes al Cielo, hidden away in the heart of the city

As we bid farewell to Cusco and Peru, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness mingled with gratitude. Gratitude for the memories made, the friendships forged, and the beauty of this remarkable country that will forever hold a piece of my heart.  A massive thank you to Latin Routes for making this happen, and for the chance to experience and learn so much in such a short space of time!
