Honeymoons Beyond the Beach
A honeymoon does not have to mean a week on a sun lounger. If that is what you want, I can tailor it, but you may be after something you will still be talking about in twenty years, and that tends to come from doing something together: walking, eating, learning, driving, watching something rare happen in front of you.
These are eight honeymoon ideas built around that. Treat each one as a starting point. I tailor the route, the pace and where you stay to suit the two of you, and I tell you the best time of year to go.
Vietnam: Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City in 14 Days
Vietnam is a long, thin country, so I plan how you move between the north, the middle and the south before I choose what to see. You start in Hanoi, where the Old Quarter is best explored on foot, with a stop every few minutes for something to eat. Then it is on to Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, where 1,133 islands and islets of limestone rise straight out of the sea, with caves the water has worn into them.
Halfway through comes Hue, the centre of imperial Vietnam until 1945. The Citadel and Imperial City there have been UNESCO listed since 1993. The trip finishes in Ho Chi Minh City, a lively place to end after the slower days that came before. There is more on my Vietnam honeymoon page.
Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Islands in 14 Days
Bangkok comes first, for the temples, the palaces and the markets, and it is a good place to arrive and be a little overwhelmed together. Then you head north to Chiang Mai, founded in 1296 as the capital of the Lan Na kingdom and still marked out by the moat around its old city. The temple of Doi Suthep sits on the mountain above it, and a cooking class is a good way to spend an afternoon, mostly because you get to eat the results.
I follow my Animal Welfare Policy, which rules out swimming with dolphins and washing elephants, so neither features in any trip I plan. There is plenty to do in Chiang Mai without them.
The trip ends on the Phi Phi Islands. Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh is closed every August and September, so I plan your dates around that. There is more on my Thailand honeymoon page.
The Maldives: Staying on a Local Island, 10 Days
The Maldives is usually sold as one resort on one island, but guesthouses have been allowed on inhabited islands since 2009. Staying in one means you share the island with the people who live there, eat what they eat and take boat trips between islands, with snorkelling and a sunset cruise along the way.
There is one trade-off, and I would rather you heard it from me. Alcohol is prohibited on local islands, whereas resorts are licensed to serve it to their guests. If a glass of wine at sunset matters on a honeymoon, I can finish with a few nights at a resort. If you are choosing between this and Mauritius, my article Mauritius or the Maldives compares the two.
Mauritius: Authentic Immersion, 10 Days
I have been to Mauritius myself. I spent a Christmas driving round the whole island and staying in different places, and it is a beautiful island with far more to it than the beach holiday it is sold as. This trip starts with the history. In Port Louis, the immigration depot at Aapravasi Ghat was built in 1849, and almost half a million indentured labourers arrived there between 1834 and 1920. It has been UNESCO listed since 2006, and the markets and colonial buildings are close by.
From there you head inland to Black River Gorges National Park, the island’s largest protected area, created in 1994 and crossed by more than 60 km of marked trails. Black River Peak, the highest point on the island, is 828 metres. The forest is home to the pink pigeon and the Mauritius kestrel, and the Chamarel waterfall drops around 100 metres. Le Morne, UNESCO listed since 2008, is a symbol of resistance to slavery and gives the coast a history of its own. You finish with a few days by the sea, and by then you will want them. My Mauritius adventure itinerary gives a day-by-day version.

The Northern Lights Above Levi, 7 Days
Levi is a ski resort in Finnish Lapland, about 170 km north of the Arctic Circle and 15 minutes from Kittilä Airport. The northern lights season runs from roughly late September to late March, and the lights are usually strongest between about 9pm and 2am, so this is a trip where you stay up. They cannot be guaranteed, which is why seven days matters. Fifty Degrees North advises at least three or four nights above the Arctic Circle, ideally five to seven, and that leaves room for cloudy nights.
In the daytime there is cross-country skiing and snowmobile tracks, and the evenings end in a sauna. Finnish sauna culture has been on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list since 2020, and Finland has about 3.3 million saunas for 5.5 million inhabitants, so you will be doing as the Finns do. My articles on the northern lights in the Arctic and what to pack for Lapland cover the rest.
The NC500 by Campervan, 7 Days
The North Coast 500 is a 516-mile loop from Inverness around the north of Scotland. A campervan is a bold honeymoon choice, and you will find out quickly how well you read a map together. Lonely Planet calls seven days the minimum and ten the ideal, and a four or five day drive misses most of it. Peak season runs from May to October, with July and August the busiest, so I plan outside those months where I can.
The freedom comes with a responsibility. The route has had problems with roadside camping and waste, and the NC500 visitor pledge asks visitors to park only in dedicated areas. I book campsites ahead so there is always somewhere to stop at the end of the day, and nobody has to hunt for a pitch in the dark.
Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu in 14 Days
The trip starts in Lima and moves on to Cusco, the Inca capital until 1532 and a UNESCO World Heritage city since 1983. Cusco sits at about 3,400 metres, so I keep the first days easy and leave the hard work for later. The Sacred Valley comes next, then Machu Picchu, UNESCO listed in the same year at about 2,430 metres.
Entry to Machu Picchu is limited to 4,500 visitors a day for most of 2026 and 5,600 on peak dates, including 19 June to 2 November (Andina, November 2025). Tickets are for set circuits and bought through the official site, so I fix your entry before anything else. If you want to add a trek, see my guide to trekking in Peru. My Peru honeymoon page and article on Peru have more.
Paros, Naxos and Santorini, 7 Days
Three islands, three different moods, and a ferry between each. You start on Paros and take the ferry to Naxos, about 45 minutes on the year-round Blue Star service. Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades at 430 square kilometres, and the interior is the reason to give it a few days: Mount Zeus, at 1,001 metres the highest peak in the Cyclades, hill villages such as Apiranthos and Filoti, and Zas Cave, linked to the myth of the young Zeus.
You finish on Santorini, about 2 hours 15 minutes from Naxos on Blue Star. Faster services run in peak season only and schedules vary (naxos.gr, checked 24 October 2026). The caldera views are what draw couples there, and I choose where you stay to get the best of them. My Europe honeymoon pages cover more of the Mediterranean.
Choosing Between Them
It comes down to the season, how active you want to be and how much time you want to yourselves. If none of them fits, I start from a blank page.
If the honeymoon is part of a bigger celebration, I also plan weddings abroad and hen and stag trips, so the whole run of it can be planned in one place. My wedding and honeymoon pages cover the destinations and what I arrange.
