Bear watching holidays can be some of the most thrilling wildlife trips on earth. One journey might mean grizzlies fishing for salmon in Alaska, another polar bears moving across the Arctic, brown bears emerging from the forests of Finland, or spectacled bears hidden in Peru’s cloud forest. The best bear holidays are not just about seeing a bear. They are about being in the right place, at the right time, with the right guide and a trip shaped around habitat, season and behaviour.
If you are drawn to wildlife that feels powerful, unpredictable and completely at home in some of the world’s wildest landscapes, bear watching can be an extraordinary way to travel. Different species call for very different settings, from coastal rainforests and Arctic tundra to mountain forests and remote river valleys.

British Columbia is one of the great bear watching regions, especially in places like the Great Bear Rainforest. Boat trips, wildlife lodges and guided excursions can all offer remarkable grizzly sightings in a dramatic coastal setting.
Alaska is one of the world’s classic bear watching destinations, with places like Katmai famous for powerful salmon run scenes and unforgettable grizzly encounters in vast wilderness landscapes.
Churchill is one of the best known places in the world for polar bear viewing, particularly in autumn when bears gather near Hudson Bay waiting for the sea ice to form.
Svalbard offers a very different polar bear experience, usually on expedition-style voyages through stark Arctic scenery where the wildlife and the setting are equally memorable. If the Arctic side of bear travel appeals, you may also enjoy reading about my own Arctic adventure.
Yellowstone combines dramatic scenery with the chance to see black bears as part of a wider wildlife experience that may also include bison, wolves and elk.
The Great Smoky Mountains offer a gentler style of bear watching holiday, with scenic drives, forest landscapes and good chances of spotting black bears in the wild.
Finland offers some of Europe’s best brown bear viewing, often from remote hides where patience and quiet can lead to extraordinary sightings in the forest.
Kamchatka is known for its huge brown bears, volcanic scenery and raw, remote feel, making it a strong choice for travellers looking for something wilder and less obvious.
Peru offers the chance to look for spectacled bears in cloud forest settings, often as part of a wider wildlife and culture itinerary.
The best bear watching holidays depend on more than destination alone. Seasonality, guiding, viewing conditions and the overall structure of the trip all matter. I can help narrow down the right option, whether you want a wildlife-focused journey, a broader nature trip with bears as the highlight, or a tailor made itinerary built around a particular species or region.
Bear watching often appeals to travellers who want a wildlife holiday with a strong sense of place, patience and anticipation rather than a constant checklist of sightings. If you are still weighing up the kind of wildlife trip that suits you best, you may also want to explore safari adventures, birdwatching adventures and primate adventures.
Because trips like these depend so much on habitat, behaviour and careful guiding, responsible wildlife travel matters just as much as the sighting itself. You can read more in Rethinking Wildlife Tourism, on my Responsible Travel page, and in my Animal Welfare Policy.
